Edit Interiors recently completed a fit-out for Gender Health Australia (GHA), a specialist, multi-disciplinary clinic providing gender-affirming healthcare for trans, non-binary and gender-questioning children, young people and adults.

Gender Health Australia’s model is strongly grounded in collaborative care, bringing together medical specialists, psychologists and other clinicians to provide safe, affirming, evidence-based services that support each client’s individual goals. Their practice emphasises inclusivity, respect and holistic wellbeing, and it was important the interior reflected these values from the moment clients walk through the door.

This project was delivered in collaboration with Echo Projects Co, who managed the build and ensured the space was executed to a high standard with a smooth, professional delivery.

Designing for emotional safety and comfort

Healthcare spaces can often feel clinical and intimidating. For this fit-out, the priority was creating a space that immediately feels calm, welcoming and non-judgemental without losing functionality or durability.

The interior palette was intentionally light and soothing, using:

  • clean white walls and ceilings to brighten the space

  • warm timber tones to create a familiar, grounded feel

  • soft greens throughout joinery and carpeting to bring calm and balance

  • layered textures for warmth and connection to nature

This approach supports the work Gender Health Australia does every day: helping people feel safe, heard and supported throughout their healthcare journey.

Key spaces within the fit-out:

Reception and waiting

The reception and waiting area sets the tone for the full clinic experience.

A standout feature is the original timber floorboards and acoustic panel brand wall providing an immediate sense of identity while keeping the overall atmosphere soft and approachable.

Instead of a typical sterile waiting room, this space has been styled in a way that feels closer to a lounge:

  • comfortable seating zones

  • soft furnishings and layered rugs

  • greenery and styling that creates comfort without clutter

  • open sightlines for a spacious, calming feel

The end result is a welcoming first impression that feels supportive rather than clinical.

Consultation and treatment rooms

The consultation and treatment rooms were designed with both client comfort and clinical practicality in mind.

Key inclusions:

  • bright, even lighting and clean finishes for a professional medical setting

  • joinery that provides both storage and visual warmth

  • soft, residential styling elements to reduce anxiety

  • a layout that supports practitioner workflow without feeling “cold”

The overall tone stays consistent across the rooms, ensuring clients experience the same sense of calm and care throughout the clinic.

Staff and support areas

Behind the scenes, staff spaces were designed to provide functionality and durability while still aligning with the overall palette.

The joinery (notably in the kitchen area) introduces the signature muted green, paired with a light benchtop and matching splashback, resulting in a space that feels modern, fresh, and cohesive with the client areas.

Why this fit-out matters

Gender-affirming healthcare is deeply personal, and the environment matters.

Gender Health Australia specifically aims to deliver care that is inclusive, affirming, developmentally informed and evidence-based, providing support services for both medical and mental health pathways.

A well-designed clinic can:

  • reduce stress and anxiety during appointments

  • improve comfort during waiting times

  • support dignity and privacy

  • help clients feel welcomed and respected

  • create a space that reflects the practice’s values

This project demonstrates that clinical spaces can still feel human: warm, safe, calm, and thoughtfully designed.
